“What is man, that he should be clean? What is he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?”
What does Job 15:14 mean?
Eliphaz is speaking here, and he's making a harsh argument: he's saying that human beings are inherently flawed and sinful simply by virtue of being human, born into a fallen condition. He's essentially saying, "How could anyone expect a person to be truly pure or righteous when humanity itself is fundamentally compromised?" This reflects the view of Job's friends, who believe his suffering must be punishment for hidden sin, since nobody is really clean anyway. What makes this moment poignant is that Eliphaz means it as a rebuke to Job, yet the question itself touches on something many of us wrestle with: our own sense of inadequacy and unworthiness.
