“and the Sabeans attacked, and took them away. Yes, they have killed the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.””
What does Job 1:15 mean?
Job's servant is reporting the sudden loss of everything, and the shock comes through in those final words: "I alone have escaped to tell you." One moment there were oxen and donkeys peacefully grazing; the next, raiders struck and took them all, killing the workers in the process. This is the first of several disasters that will pile onto Job in rapid succession, each messenger arriving with increasingly devastating news. What makes this detail matter is that Job learns about each loss only after it's happened, helpless and far away. He has no warning, no chance to prevent anything. The servants who survived to report what happened become Job's only connection to understanding what his life has become. In the middle of unimaginable loss, someone survived to bear witness, and that's often all we have in the darkest moments—someone to acknowledge what we've lost and say, "Yes, this really happened."
