What does Jeremiah 9:3 mean?
Jeremiah is describing a society where lying has become as natural and practiced as archery, where people have cultivated deception into a skilled weapon. The prophet observes that these communities have grown prosperous and powerful, but not through honesty or integrity, rather through a pattern of wrongdoing that keeps spiraling deeper. What grieves God most isn't just the individual lies, but that this cycle of falsehood has created distance between people and their Creator, leaving them disconnected from the God who calls them to something better. The message cuts past surface morality to suggest that when we make deception our default, we inevitably lose sight of who God is and what he offers.
