Jeremiah 9:20
“Yet hear Yahweh’s word, you women. Let your ear receive the word of his mouth. Teach your daughters wailing, and everyone her neighbor lamentation.”
What does Jeremiah 9:20 mean?
In a time of coming judgment, God calls the women of Jerusalem to listen carefully and then to prepare the next generation by teaching them songs of mourning. The image here isn't morbid; it reflects an ancient practice where women would lead communal grief rituals, helping people process loss and pain together. God is essentially saying: pay attention to what I'm telling you, and then help your daughters and neighbors understand the weight of what's coming so they can grieve honestly and turn back to me. There's something tender underneath this hard message. God is asking people, especially mothers and women who shaped their communities, to be bearers of truth even in sorrow. Sometimes the most loving thing we can do is help others face difficult realities rather than hide from them.
