Jeremiah 9:15
“Therefore Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, says, “Behold, I will feed them, even this people, with wormwood, and give them water of gall to drink.”
What does Jeremiah 9:15 mean?
God is describing the bitter consequences that will come to people who turn away from him and live in ways that harm themselves and others. Wormwood and gall are intensely bitter substances, so this is poetic language for experiencing the painful results of their own choices, not arbitrary punishment. When we ignore God's guidance and follow paths of deception or cruelty, we inevitably find ourselves in difficult, sorrowful places. The image reminds us that disobedience carries real weight, and God allows us to face those consequences so we might turn back toward what's good and true.
