What does Jeremiah 8:7 mean?
Jeremiah is using something we can all observe in nature to highlight a spiritual blindness. Even the birds instinctively know when it's time to migrate, when seasons change, when to return home, yet God's own people have ignored His clear guidance and teachings. It's a gentle but pointed comparison showing that creatures without reason follow their created purpose, while humans with free will and God's revealed law have chosen to ignore it. The prophet is expressing God's disappointment during a time when Judah had turned away from faithfulness. The birds aren't choosing their paths or questioning their instincts, but God's people are choosing to remain ignorant of what He has shown them. It's a reminder that knowing what God wants from us and actually doing it are two different things, and that sometimes our willful blindness is harder to excuse than any honest struggle.
