“Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then isn’t the health of the daughter of my people recovered?”
What does Jeremiah 8:22 mean?
Jeremiah is asking a desperate, almost rhetorical question here, speaking on behalf of a suffering people. Gilead was known in ancient times for producing a precious healing balm, so asking "Is there no balm in Gilead?" means: doesn't help exist anywhere? The prophet is lamenting that despite having access to healing resources, the people's wounds (both physical and spiritual, caused by their unfaithfulness and the coming judgment) remain unhealed. What makes this haunting is that Jeremiah isn't denying that healing *could* be possible. He's questioning why, when remedies exist, his people still suffer.
