“They have built the high places of Topheth, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I didn’t command, nor did it come into my mind.”
What does Jeremiah 7:31 mean?
Jeremiah is describing one of the darkest practices of his time: parents sacrificing their own children to foreign gods in a place called Topheth. God makes clear through the prophet that this horror was never part of his instructions to his people, not even a fleeting thought in his mind. The shock in those final words matters deeply, because it shows God's utter rejection of the idea that he would ever demand such a thing. This passage appears as Jeremiah confronts the people of Judah about how far they've drifted from God's ways. Rather than following the covenant relationship God offered them, they've adopted practices from surrounding nations that contradict everything God stands for.
