Jeremiah 7:24

But they didn’t listen or turn their ear, but walked in their own counsels and in the stubbornness of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.

What does Jeremiah 7:24 mean?

The people Jeremiah is addressing had been given clear direction from God, yet they refused to hear it. Instead, they trusted their own judgment and followed the desires of their stubborn hearts, which led them away from God rather than closer to him. The image of going backward instead of forward captures something we recognize from our own experience: when we ignore wise guidance and insist on our own way, we often end up further from where we actually want to be. This verse reminds us that spiritual stagnation or decline isn't usually about a sudden fall, but about a pattern of small choices to turn away from what we know to be true.
