Jeremiah 7:22

What does Jeremiah 7:22 mean?
God is telling the Israelites something surprising: when he first freed them from slavery, he didn't give them detailed instructions about offerings and sacrifices. His initial focus was on relationship, freedom, and obedience to his basic commands. Over time, as the people settled in their land, an elaborate sacrificial system developed, but that wasn't God's original priority or intention. This matters because it speaks directly to what God actually cares about. Throughout Jeremiah, God repeatedly emphasizes that he wants the people's genuine hearts and faithful living more than he wants ritual performance. When people treat religious practices as a substitute for real obedience and justice, God finds it empty. The verse invites us to ask ourselves the same question: are we going through the motions of religion, or are we actually listening to what God is asking of us?
