What does Jeremiah 6:5 mean?

These are the words of an enemy army preparing to attack Jerusalem under cover of darkness, laying out their plan to demolish the city's fortified buildings. Jeremiah is reporting what he "hears" from these attackers, showing us the very real military threat coming against God's people because of their unfaithfulness and injustice. It's a sobering moment in the book where the prophet describes the approaching judgment, not to frighten us into despair, but to wake us to how seriously God takes our choices and how destruction follows when we turn away from Him. Many people facing hard consequences in their own lives can recognize in this passage how warning often comes before disaster, and how turning back to God is always the better path.
