Jeremiah 50:7
“All who found them have devoured them. Their adversaries said, ‘We are not guilty, because they have sinned against Yahweh, the habitation of righteousness, even Yahweh, the hope of their fathers.’”
What does Jeremiah 50:7 mean?
Jeremiah is describing how the people of Israel have been scattered and conquered, with other nations preying on them without shame. The enemies justify their cruelty by claiming Israel deserved it because they turned away from God, who is described here as the source of all that is right and true, and the God their ancestors trusted. What's striking is how the attackers use religion to excuse their violence. They act as though God's judgment on Israel gives them permission to do whatever they want. Jeremiah's point is that even when people fall away from God, their enemies don't get a free pass to treat them brutally. Wrong behavior by one side doesn't make cruelty acceptable on the other. This verse reminds us that God sees both the spiritual unfaithfulness and the callous exploitation, and both matter to him.
