What does Jeremiah 49:7 mean?

Jeremiah is delivering hard news to Edom, a neighboring nation that had a reputation for being wise and shrewd. These questions aren't really asking for answers, they're expressing shock and disappointment, as if to say: "You who were known for your good judgment, where is it now?" The city of Teman was apparently a center of wisdom in Edom, so Jeremiah is pointedly asking where all that celebrated intelligence has gone. What makes this meaningful is that sometimes nations (or people) who pride themselves on being clever enough to handle anything find themselves in situations where all their wisdom fails them. Edom's downfall was coming, and no amount of cunning would save them. It's a humbling reminder that real security never comes from cleverness alone, especially when we're not aligned with God's purposes.
