What does Jeremiah 49:27 mean?

Jeremiah spoke this warning against Damascus, the capital of Syria, during a time when God was pronouncing judgment on the nations surrounding Judah. The imagery of fire consuming a city's walls and royal palaces was a vivid way of describing military defeat and destruction, using language his listeners would have immediately understood as total devastation. Ben Hadad was a title for Syrian kings (rather than one specific person), so this was directed at whoever ruled Damascus at that time. The prophecy expressed God's sovereignty over all nations, not just Israel, and His intention to bring consequences for their actions.
