Jeremiah 48:13
“Moab will be ashamed of Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel, their confidence.”
What does Jeremiah 48:13 mean?
Jeremiah is comparing Moab's coming disappointment to something his own people knew well. Just as the Israelites had foolishly trusted in the idol at Bethel instead of in God, so Moab trusted in Chemosh (their national god) and would soon discover that false confidence leads nowhere. When military disaster strikes, both nations will realize how empty their religious alternatives really were. The prophet is essentially saying that turning away from the true God always ends in shame, whether you're an Israelite or a neighboring nation, and that lesson applies just as much to us today when we put our faith in things that can't ultimately sustain us.
