What does Jeremiah 46:7 mean?
This is Jeremiah speaking about Egypt's military power, using the image of the overflowing Nile River to describe an army surging forward with unstoppable force. The Nile's flooding was both a defining feature of Egyptian life and a symbol of Egypt's strength, so the comparison would have been immediately powerful to ancient readers. Yet the prophet is actually introducing a warning: just as floods can be contained and controlled, so too will Egypt's might be stopped by God's purposes. It's a poetic way of saying that even the mightiest earthly powers are not beyond God's reach.
