“Behold, I watch over them for evil, and not for good; and all the men of Judah who are in the land of Egypt will be consumed by the sword and by the famine, until they are all gone.”
What does Jeremiah 44:27 mean?
This is one of the hardest verses in Jeremiah, spoken at a moment of profound spiritual rebellion. The people of Judah had fled to Egypt after Jerusalem's fall, and when the prophet warned them to trust God rather than chase after false gods, they refused to listen. God's "watching over them for evil" means He will allow the natural consequences of their choices to unfold, not that He delights in harm for its own sake. The exile to Egypt represented a complete reversal of Israel's story. Just as God once led them out of Egypt toward freedom and covenant, now they were running back into Egypt in defiance, and judgment would follow them there. This verse reflects the tragic reality that persistent rejection of God's guidance eventually leads to destruction, not because God is cruel, but because turning away from the source of life always carries consequences.
