What does Jeremiah 42:1 mean?

After the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem, the surviving remnant of Judah gathered around the prophet Jeremiah seeking his guidance. Johanan and the other military leaders, representing everyone from the least important to the greatest in their community, approached him together, showing they recognized they needed God's wisdom for their next steps. This moment captures how desperate circumstances can unite people across social ranks and make them willing to listen for God's direction. What follows in this chapter shows what happens when people ask for guidance but may already have decided what they want to hear.
