Jeremiah 41:5
“men came from Shechem, from Shiloh, and from Samaria, even eighty men, having their beards shaved and their clothes torn, and having cut themselves, with meal offerings and frankincense in their hand, to bring them to Yahweh’s house.”
What does Jeremiah 41:5 mean?
These men were making a pilgrimage to worship at the ruined temple in Jerusalem, and their appearance tells a story of profound grief. In ancient Israel, shaving your beard, tearing your clothes, and cutting yourself were outward signs of deep mourning, so these eighty travelers were essentially saying with their whole bodies that something devastating had happened. They were bringing grain and incense as offerings, hoping to reconnect with God during a time of national catastrophe (this was after Jerusalem's fall). What strikes many readers is that despite their sorrow, despite the destruction around them, these people still showed up to seek God. Their willingness to make this journey and present their offerings, even while grieving, reminds us that worship isn't about having it all together, and that sometimes drawing near to God happens precisely in our hardest seasons.
