“Declare in Judah, and publish in Jerusalem; and say, ‘Blow the trumpet in the land!’ Cry aloud and say, ‘Assemble yourselves! Let us go into the fortified cities!’”
What does Jeremiah 4:5 mean?
Jeremiah is calling out an urgent alarm—Babylon is coming, and Judah needs to wake up fast. The prophet uses the most dramatic language available: trumpets, loud cries, and gathering in fortified cities, which would have been the emergency protocol everyone recognized. This isn't a gentle suggestion but a desperate plea for people to take seriously the danger they're facing. What makes this passage particularly poignant is that Judah had been ignoring Jeremiah's warnings for years. So here he's essentially saying: if words won't get through, maybe the image of everyone scrambling to sound the alarm will finally make people understand that consequences are actually coming.
