“You, when you are made desolate, what will you do? Though you clothe yourself with scarlet, though you deck yourself with ornaments of gold, though you enlarge your eyes with makeup, you make yourself beautiful in vain. Your lovers despise you. They seek your life.”
What does Jeremiah 4:30 mean?
Jeremiah is picturing Jerusalem as a woman who has lost everything that matters, yet still clings to outward appearances as if they might save her. He's saying that no amount of fine clothing, jewelry, or makeup can fix what's broken at the core, and those she trusted for protection will turn against her instead. The prophet uses this stark image to show what happens when a city (or a person) has abandoned God's ways: external beauty becomes meaningless when internal security is gone. The "lovers" he mentions are the foreign nations Jerusalem looked to for help rather than trusting God, and they will prove to be fair-weather allies at best.
