“Then took they Jeremiah and threw him into the dungeon of Malchijah the king’s son, that was in the court of the guard. They let down Jeremiah with cords. In the dungeon there was no water, but mire; and Jeremiah sank in the mire.”
What does Jeremiah 38:6 mean?
Jeremiah faced this brutal punishment because he kept speaking God's truth even when the king and his officials wanted him silenced. After warning Jerusalem that surrender to Babylon was inevitable, he was arrested and literally thrown into a muddy cistern to suffer and die. The "mire" here wasn't just uncomfortable, it was life-threatening: he sank deeper with no water to drink and no way out alone. This moment captures something many of us recognize from our own hard seasons: when you've tried to do what's right and everything falls apart anyway. Jeremiah didn't get rescued because he was faithful, at least not immediately. He sat in that darkness with no rescue in sight. Yet the story doesn't end there, and neither does his. Sometimes the deepest pit becomes the place where we discover that God's presence isn't dependent on our circumstances changing right away.
