Jeremiah 38:21
βBut if you refuse to go out, this is the word that Yahweh has shown me:β
What does Jeremiah 38:21 mean?
Jeremiah is speaking to King Zedekiah during the siege of Jerusalem, offering him a choice with real consequences. The prophet has just told him that surrender to Babylon will spare his life and his family, while staying in the city will result in destruction. This verse marks the moment when Jeremiah turns from persuasion to warning, saying essentially, "If you won't listen to what I'm telling you, here's what God has revealed will happen instead." It's a compassionate but firm boundary: the prophet has offered wisdom, and now he's about to share the harder truth about what refusal costs. Many of us know this feeling in our own lives, when someone who cares about us tells us plainly that ignoring good counsel leads somewhere we don't want to go.
