Jeremiah 37:17
“then Zedekiah the king sent, and had him brought out. The king asked him secretly in his house, “Is there any word from Yahweh?” Jeremiah said, “There is.” He also said, “You will be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.””
What does Jeremiah 37:17 mean?
King Zedekiah is in deep trouble. Jerusalem is under siege, and though he's imprisoned Jeremiah out of fear and frustration, he can't shake his need to know what God is actually saying. So he sneaks the prophet out for a private conversation, hoping for better news than the public messages Jeremiah has been delivering. What Jeremiah tells him isn't what the king wants to hear, but it is what God says: surrender is coming, and Babylon will prevail. There's something both sad and hopeful in this moment. Zedekiah asks the question, which means some part of him still wants truth from God, yet he's not ready to act on it. Many of us know this tension, don't we? We seek guidance we're not prepared to follow, or we hope God might say something different from what we suspect He already has. Jeremiah's faithfulness here, speaking hard truth in private just as he spoke it publicly, reminds us that real spiritual guidance means hearing what's true, not just what's comforting.
