Jeremiah 37:14

Then Jeremiah said, “That is false! I am not defecting to the Chaldeans.” But he didn’t listen to him; so Irijah siezed Jeremiah, and brought him to the princes.

What does Jeremiah 37:14 mean?

Jeremiah is protesting his arrest with complete honesty, declaring that he has no intention of abandoning his people to the enemy. The officer Irijah, however, refuses to believe him and drags him before the city's leaders anyway. This moment captures how devastating it can be when someone tells the truth and simply isn't heard, especially when the stakes feel impossibly high. For Jeremiah, speaking God's unpopular message of surrender had already made him deeply unpopular, so his denial of disloyalty falls on deaf ears, and he ends up imprisoned for words meant to save his people.
