“Concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah you shall say, ‘Yahweh says: “You have burned this scroll, saying, “Why have you written therein, saying, ‘The king of Babylon will certainly come and destroy this land, and will cause to cease from there man and animal?’”’”
What does Jeremiah 36:29 mean?
King Jehoiakim had just burned a scroll containing God's warnings delivered through the prophet Jeremiah, hoping to destroy the message itself. But God tells Jeremiah that burning the words doesn't erase the truth or stop what's coming, and now Jehoiakim will face the full weight of those consequences he tried to silence. This reveals something hard but important: rejecting God's warning doesn't protect us from it. In fact, stubborn resistance often makes things worse because we lose the chance to change course and prepare. The king's attempt to control the narrative by destroying the scroll shows how human pride can make us double down on destruction rather than turn toward safety.
