Jeremiah 35:14
““The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab that he commanded his sons, not to drink wine, are performed; and to this day they drink none, for they obey their father’s commandment; but I have spoken to you, rising up early and speaking, and you have not listened to me.”
What does Jeremiah 35:14 mean?
God is using the Rechabites, a family known for their strict obedience to their ancestor Jonadab's rules about not drinking wine, as a mirror held up to Judah's disobedience. Despite living under a simple human command for generations, they've remained faithful, yet God's own people repeatedly ignore his prophets and his direct calls to turn back to him. The contrast is meant to sting: if people can honor their forefather's instruction so faithfully, why can't Judah honor their God? This speaks to how our choices about obedience matter, and how sometimes outsiders or those we might overlook can teach us about faithfulness and listening.
