“But when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up into the land, we said, ‘Come, and let us go to Jerusalem for fear of the army of the Chaldeans, and for fear of the army of the Syrians; so we will dwell at Jerusalem.’””
What does Jeremiah 35:11 mean?
The Rechabites, a faithful clan who had committed to living by their ancestor's strict rules, are explaining to the prophet Jeremiah why they temporarily broke one of those rules: they entered Jerusalem to escape the approaching armies of King Nebuchadnezzar. Rather than painting them as hypocrites, this moment reveals how even the most devoted people sometimes have to bend their principles when survival itself is at stake.
