What does Jeremiah 34:19 mean?
This verse refers to a solemn covenant ritual where people passed between the cut pieces of a sacrificial calf, essentially calling down curses on themselves if they broke their promise. In this case, leaders and common people alike had sworn before God to free enslaved Hebrews, binding themselves to that commitment in the most serious way their culture knew.
