Jeremiah 34:14
“At the end of seven years, every man of you shall release his brother who is a Hebrew, who has been sold to you, and has served you six years. You shall let him go free from you; but your fathers didn’t listen to me, and didn’t incline their ear.”
What does Jeremiah 34:14 mean?
God had given Israel a compassionate law: enslaved Hebrew people were to be released after six years of service, allowing them to start fresh and rebuild their lives. This wasn't meant to be a suggestion—it was a core part of how God wanted his people to treat one another with dignity and mercy. But Jeremiah is telling the people that their ancestors repeatedly ignored this command, and the current generation is doing the same thing. The prophet is calling them back to obedience while also gently naming a hard truth: ignoring God's instructions about how we treat vulnerable people has real consequences for a community's spiritual health.
