Jeremiah 34:1

The word which came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, with all his army, all the kingdoms of the earth that were under his dominion, and all the peoples, were fighting against Jerusalem and against all its cities, saying:

What does Jeremiah 34:1 mean?

Jeremiah received this message from God during one of Jerusalem's darkest moments, when the powerful Babylonian king and his massive army had the city surrounded and under siege. The verse sets the scene for what God was about to tell Jeremiah to communicate to the people, even as their situation seemed hopeless. Sometimes God speaks most urgently when circumstances feel most desperate, reminding us that He hasn't abandoned His people even when everything looks lost. What follows in the next verses reveals that God's word in hard times often comes with both warning and promise for those willing to listen.
