“I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from following them, to do them good. I will put my fear in their hearts, that they may not depart from me.”
What does Jeremiah 32:40 mean?
God is making a promise here that goes deeper than keeping rules or following commands from a distance. He's saying that his commitment to his people won't change, that he won't give up on them, and that he'll continue working for their wellbeing no matter what. The second part reveals what makes this covenant different: God wants to put a genuine reverence and awe of him into people's hearts so that they naturally want to stay close to him, not out of obligation but out of love and respect. This was a radical message for Jeremiah's audience, who were facing exile and despair. They could hardly imagine that God would still be faithful to them. But the promise suggests that God's devotion isn't based on whether people deserve it or keep performing perfectly. Instead, God works from the inside out, transforming hearts so that people's deepest desire becomes staying connected to him.
