Jeremiah 32:36
“Now therefore Yahweh, the God of Israel, says concerning this city, about which you say, “It is given into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence:””
What does Jeremiah 32:36 mean?
Jeremiah speaks these words during Jerusalem's siege, when the city is facing starvation, disease, and military defeat. God is acknowledging what seems obviously true: the Babylonians are winning, and the city appears doomed. Rather than denying the real suffering happening around him, Jeremiah names it directly, laying out exactly what people are experiencing and fearing. This matters because sometimes we need permission to be honest about our circumstances before we can hear anything else. God doesn't ask Jeremiah to pretend things are fine or to skip over the hard reality. The next part of this passage (which continues beyond this verse) shows that God has something more to say, but he starts by meeting people in their actual situation, not in denial of it.
