“not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which covenant of mine they broke, although I was a husband to them,” says Yahweh.”
What does Jeremiah 31:32 mean?
God is contrasting what he plans to do with what he's already tried. He reminds the people that he made a covenant with their ancestors at the exodus, when he personally led them out of slavery like a caring husband tenderly guides his beloved. Yet despite his faithful love and clear agreement, they repeatedly broke that covenant and turned away from him. What makes this tender and heartbreaking at once is God's language of betrayal—he compares himself to a faithful husband whose partner has been unfaithful. He kept his promises; they didn't keep theirs. This sets up what comes next in Jeremiah, where God promises to make a new covenant written on people's hearts instead of stone tablets, because the external rules and reminders clearly weren't working.
