Jeremiah 3:7
“I said after she had done all these things, ‘She will return to me;’ but she didn’t return; and her treacherous sister Judah saw it.”
What does Jeremiah 3:7 mean?
God is speaking here about the northern kingdom of Israel, using the image of an unfaithful spouse who keeps breaking promises to return. Even after sending prophets and allowing consequences to fall, Israel continued in idolatry and injustice, yet God kept hoping they would turn back to him. What makes this verse particularly sad is that Judah, the southern kingdom, witnessed all this unfold, saw how God dealt with Israel's rebellion, and then did the exact same thing anyway, becoming equally treacherous. It's a portrait of how we sometimes watch others suffer the results of poor choices and then repeat those same choices ourselves, as if we thought we'd somehow be different.
