Jeremiah 29:7
“Seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to Yahweh for it; for in its peace you will have peace.””
What does Jeremiah 29:7 mean?
When the Jewish people were exiled to Babylon, it would have been natural for them to resent their captors and hope only for escape. Yet God told them to actively work for the wellbeing of the very city holding them captive, and to pray for it. This wasn't resignation to injustice, but an invitation to find stability and meaning right where they were, even in hard circumstances. The deeper wisdom here is that our own flourishing is bound up with the flourishing of our community. When you invest in the peace, health, and justice of the place around you, you build the conditions where you yourself can live with less fear and more wholeness. This applies whether you're content where you are or struggling to accept your current season. Peace spreads outward from small acts of kindness, advocacy, and prayer.
