““Yahweh has made you priest in the place of Jehoiada the priest, that there may be officers in Yahweh’s house, for every man who is crazy, and makes himself a prophet, that you should put him in the stocks and in shackles.”
What does Jeremiah 29:26 mean?
This verse captures a moment of tension in the temple, where the priest Pashhur is being criticized by Jeremiah for imprisoning him. Pashhur had locked Jeremiah in stocks because he was prophesying judgment against Jerusalem, and someone is now sarcastically telling Pashhur that his job as priest is to restrain crazy people who claim to speak for God, like Jeremiah. The message stings because it reveals the deeper conflict: religious leaders were dismissing God's genuine warning as madness simply because they didn't want to hear it. This speaks to something still true today. Sometimes the hardest truths feel like attacks, and it's tempting to dismiss messengers we don't like as unreliable or extreme. But the verse invites us to pause and ask: am I rejecting this because it's actually false, or because I'm uncomfortable with what it's saying? Sometimes the person we want to silence is exactly who God is trying to speak through.
