“because they have done foolish things in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives, and have spoken words in my name falsely, which I didn’t command them. I am he who knows, and am witness,” says Yahweh.”
What does Jeremiah 29:23 mean?
God is calling out the false prophets in Jerusalem for living hypocritically while claiming to speak on his behalf. They were committing real sins (adultery, unfaithfulness) while simultaneously claiming authority from God to tell others what to do, which made their spiritual leadership a complete mockery. The deeper message here is that God sees everything, even what people hide or rationalize away. You can't fool God by wrapping your own agenda or desires in religious language. He knows the difference between someone genuinely seeking to follow him and someone using faith as a cover for self-serving behavior. That's both a warning and, strangely, also comforting: God's judgment matters more than human reputation, which means he won't let dishonesty have the final word.
