What does Jeremiah 28:8 mean?
Jeremiah is reminding the priest Hananiah (and listeners) of something basic about how God's messengers have always operated: they typically bring hard news, not easy promises. Throughout Israel's history, the real prophets warned people about coming judgment, conflict, and suffering when the people turned away from God. This matters because Hananiah had just promised a quick, painless end to Babylon's occupation, and Jeremiah wanted people to remember that authentic prophecy usually calls people to account rather than telling them what they want to hear. It's not that every true word from God is dark, but when someone only speaks comfort and never warns of consequences, that's a red flag worth noticing.
