Jeremiah 27:18
“But if they are prophets, and if Yahweh’s word is with them, let them now make intercession to Yahweh of Armies, that the vessels which are left in Yahweh’s house, in the house of the king of Judah, and at Jerusalem, don’t go to Babylon.”
What does Jeremiah 27:18 mean?
Jeremiah is challenging the false prophets of his day who kept insisting everything would be fine and Babylon wouldn't conquer Judah. He's essentially saying: if these people really speak for God and have God's word, then let them pray right now that the temple treasures and royal possessions won't be carried off to Babylon. It's a test of their credibility, because if they truly had God's favor, their intercession should work. This cuts to the heart of what was happening in Jeremiah's time: Jerusalem was about to fall, and the prophet knew it because God had told him so. The false prophets were offering false comfort, and Jeremiah was inviting them to put their money where their mouth was through prayer. For us, it's a reminder that we can test the claims people make about speaking for God by looking at whether their words align with reality and with God's character, and whether their confidence is truly grounded in God's purposes or just in wishful thinking.
