Jeremiah 24:2
“One basket had very good figs, like the figs that are first-ripe; and the other basket had very bad figs, which could not be eaten, they were so bad.”
What does Jeremiah 24:2 mean?
Jeremiah is describing a vision where God shows him two baskets of figs, one full of beautiful, ripe fruit and the other containing figs so spoiled they're inedible. The good figs represent the exiles taken to Babylon, while the bad figs represent those who remained in Jerusalem and trusted in false leaders and false prophets. God is communicating something surprising and hopeful: the people scattered away from home, stripped of everything familiar, are actually the ones He's going to work with and restore. Meanwhile, those who stayed behind in apparent comfort and security have actually separated themselves from God's purposes. It's a reminder that sometimes what looks like loss or punishment from the outside is actually where God's real work of transformation is happening, and what appears to be blessing can actually be spiritual decay.
