What does Jeremiah 22:26 mean?
This verse is part of Jeremiah's harsh message to Jehoiakim, a king of Judah who rejected God's way and mistreated his people. The prophet is declaring that both the king and his mother will be torn from their homeland and die in exile, far from everything familiar. What makes this especially painful is that exile meant separation not just from place, but from identity, from the Temple, from belonging. For an ancient Israelite, being cast out to a foreign land was almost like being erased. Yet even in this severe warning, God is still speaking, still calling the king to reckon with the consequences of his choices. Sometimes the most loving thing God can do is make clear that our refusal to turn around leads somewhere terrible, so that we might turn around while we still can.
