“Afterward,” says Yahweh, “I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah, his servants, and the people, even those who are left in this city from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those who seek their life. He will strike them with the edge of the sword. He will not spare them, have pity, or have mercy.”’”
What does Jeremiah 21:7 mean?
Jeremiah delivered this hard message to King Zedekiah during Babylon's siege of Jerusalem, when the people were desperately hoping God would rescue them. Instead, God tells them that after the immediate crisis passes, they will be handed over to Nebuchadnezzar, the Babylonian king, without mercy or escape. This wasn't cruelty for its own sake, but a consequence of Judah's repeated rejection of God's warnings through the prophets and their refusal to turn back to him. The passage is difficult because it shows God allowing terrible suffering, yet it also reflects a pattern throughout Jeremiah: God gave his people countless chances to repent, and this judgment came only after long patience was exhausted.
