Jeremiah 20:5
βMoreover I will give all the riches of this city, and all its gains, and all its precious things, yes, I will give all the treasures of the kings of Judah into the hand of their enemies. They will make them captives, take them, and carry them to Babylon.β
What does Jeremiah 20:5 mean?
Jeremiah spoke this warning to Judah during a dark time when the nation was drifting further from God, trusting in their wealth and military strength instead of turning back to him. He's telling them that everything they've gathered and taken pride in, all their gold and treasures accumulated by generations of kings, won't protect them. Their enemies will take it all and carry them away into exile in Babylon. This is a hard word, but it came with a purpose: to shake people awake and show them that no amount of material security or political power can substitute for a right relationship with God. Sometimes we need to hear that the things we're clinging to won't save us, so we might finally reach for what actually can.
