Jeremiah 2:8

The priests didn’t say, ‘Where is Yahweh?’ and those who handle the law didn’t know me. The rulers also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and followed things that do not profit.

What does Jeremiah 2:8 mean?

God is grieving here over spiritual leaders who have completely lost their way. The priests, legal experts, rulers, and prophets were supposed to guide people toward God, but instead they've become distant from him, pursuing empty idols and false gods like Baal that can't actually help anyone. What makes this painful is that these weren't ordinary people—they were the ones trusted with knowing God and pointing others toward him. Their failure wasn't accidental but a choice to chase after worthless things instead of seeking the living God. When leadership abandons its calling, the whole community suffers because people have no one trustworthy to help them find their way home.
