Jeremiah 2:3

Israel was holiness to Yahweh, the first fruits of his increase. All who devour him will be held guilty. Evil will come on them,”’ says Yahweh.”

What does Jeremiah 2:3 mean?

God is describing Israel as his precious firstfruits, the very best of his harvest set apart for himself. This means they were meant to belong to him completely and to reflect his character to the world. When Jeremiah spoke these words, Israel had turned away from God to worship other gods and chase after empty things, so the warning here is serious: those who exploit or lead God's people astray will face his judgment. The underlying message is tender even in its warning, because God is calling Israel back to remembering what they were meant to be, not what they've become.
