What does Jeremiah 19:8 mean?

Jeremiah is describing the devastation that will come to Jerusalem if the people don't turn from their harmful practices. When he speaks of the city becoming "an astonishment and a hissing," he's painting a picture of total ruin so severe that passersby will stop in shock and make sounds of derision or horror, the way people might react to something utterly destroyed or cursed. This wasn't meant to be cruel prophecy for its own sake, but rather a urgent wake-up call, a way of saying "the consequences of this path are real and severe." For those of us in difficult seasons, the message isn't that God enjoys our suffering, but that our choices matter and that turning back toward what's right can change our trajectory.
