What does Jeremiah 19:13 mean?
Jeremiah is describing what will happen to Jerusalem when God's judgment comes: the city's homes, including the royal palaces, will become as desolate and defiled as Topheth, a garbage dump outside the city associated with death and destruction. The reference to burning incense and pouring drinks to "the army of the sky" (meaning the stars and planets, which people worshipped as gods) shows how deeply the people had turned from God to follow other religions and false hopes. This wasn't just a private problem hidden away, either, the unfaithfulness was happening openly on their own rooftops. What Jeremiah is saying, in essence, is that when we persistently turn from God to chase other things we think will save us or satisfy us, there are real consequences, and the things we've built our lives around won't protect us when judgment comes.
