“It will happen, if you diligently listen to me,” says Yahweh, “to bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the Sabbath day, but to make the Sabbath day holy, to do no work therein;”
What does Jeremiah 17:24 mean?
God is making a promise here: if the people of Jerusalem truly listen to his guidance about honoring the Sabbath, then blessings will follow. Specifically, he's asking them to stop treating the Sabbath like any other day by carrying goods through the city gates or conducting business (the "burden" refers to commercial activity and ordinary work).
