What does Jeremiah 17:21 mean?

God is calling people to take the Sabbath seriously, not as a legalistic rule but as a protected day of rest. The instruction to avoid carrying burdens and doing business at the city gates (where commerce and work happened) was meant to help people actually step away from their labor and worries. Even in Jeremiah's time, people were tempted to ignore this rhythm, treating every day the same and wearing themselves out. There's something deeply human about needing permission to stop, to let one day be different from the rest, and God is gently insisting that his people honor that need rather than grinding through endlessly.
